GREAT BRITAIN. London Carmen's Trade Union Silver Award Star, ND (ca. 1910). UNCIRCULATED.
By Toye & Co. Obverse: Six-pointed star with floral scrollwork engraved in each limb, and with four of the six limbs containing L-C-T-U initials; central medallion affixed and engraved with border and with horse rearing left applique; Reverse: Engraving "Presented to / BRO W. RUFFLES / AS A MARK OF RESPECT / FROM THE BROTHERS." Loop and rings attached at the top. Deeply toned, with the central medallion exhibiting great lustrous brilliance.

The London Carmen's Trade Union was formed in 1888 and represented carriage drivers who worked in London's East End, traveling between the docks and warehouses there. The union held their meetings near Aldgate at the Ship and Star pub, with their name eventually changing to the National Union of Vehicle Workers in 1914 (an indication of how mechanized 'carriages' were now the norm and the horse-drawn ones of before were being supplanted).

Estimate: $150.00- $300.00
