GREAT BRITAIN. Quartet of Contemporary Counterfeit Countermarked Dollars (4 Pieces), ND (1804). George III. Grade Range: FINE to VERY FINE.
cf. S-3766. Contemporary counterfeits with the octagonal George III bust countermark on a Spain 8 Reales (1802-S CN), (2) Lima 8 Reales (1800-IJ and 1784-MJ), and Mexico City 8 Reales (1796-FM). Close personal inspection is advised and will reward the diligent bidder. SOLD AS IS/NO RETURNS. All exhibit varying degree of rich mottled cabinet patina, with some that quite attractive.

As with the official oval hallmark issued several years prior to the octagonal issuance, a plethora of counterfeits are known. A few of these contemporary counterfeits are quite similar to the official issue, but to the trained eye can be spotted rather quickly. However, some are the exact opposite and in fact are crude, goofy looking and easy to spot. This series is indeed much more complex than many numismatists give it credit for with a fair number of extremely rare host coins and denominations. A neat and interesting gathering perfect for collectors of British or cut & countermarked issues looking to expand their knowledge and appreciation of this series.

Estimate: $900.00- $1200.00
