Cuba Republica de Cuba 1000 Pesos 6.9.1869 Pick 60 PMG Extremely Fine 40. In 1868, wealthy Cubans led by plantation owner Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, declared independence from Spain, which began the Ten Years War. Although Spain was ultimately resilient and held onto Cuba for another 30 years, the seeds of change were planted. This handsome, large format note, together with a 500 Pesos note, was created for all sorts of payments, both private and public, as stated in Spanish at front center. At bottom left is the signature of Cespedes himself.
