Spain Banco de Espana 100 Pesetas 11.3.1938 Pick 90r Remainder PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45. This iconic design was printed by Thomas de la Rue for the Republican Front, which had relocated to Barcelona. "Dama de Elche" is one of the earliest icons in a long history of incredible Spanish art. The limestone carving is widely believed to be from the 4th Century BC, and was heralded as a national treasure after being discovered in 1897. The 1938 issues of Barcelona are also remarkable icons in Spanish history. When the Nationalists captured Barcelona (after taking Madrid) these notes were no longer needed, and remained unissued. Twenty million of these notes were printed for circulation, and it is believed nearly the entire stock was destroyed to prevent it from falling into the hands of the Nationalists. A scant few examples survived, in a variety of unissued formats, like proofs and specimens. This remainder is lacking a signature and serial numbers. The Phoenician ship and 4th century limestone carving at front make this one of Spain's most iconic designs. Very rare and incredibly collectible. https://currency.ha.com/itm/world-currency/spain-banco-de-espana-100-pesetas-1131938-pick-90r-remainder-pmg-choice-extremely-fine-45/p/4028-31021.s?type=CoinArchivesCurrency4028 HID08706262019 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
