Spain Banco de Espana 1000 Pesetas 18.7.1937 Pick 106E PMG Very Fine 20. During the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s, tensions between the various factions came to a head in the country. King Alfonso XIII was deposed in 1931 in favor of the Second Spanish Republic. After that, a chaotic time began, in which a plethora of governments operated, or attempted to operate, until Francisco Franco solidified power and rules as a dictator from 1939 until 1975. During the 1930s, various political factions were attempting to grab power, and during that time, various banknotes and other currency instruments circulated throughout Spain. This incredibly rare 1000 Pesetas was most likely printed by a faction of Nationalists supportive of the former Spanish monarchy, as evidenced by the portrait of King Carlos 1 on this banknote. Additionally, the coat of arms of King Alfonso XIII is seen on the initial denomination as well. Coen and Cartevalori in Milan were tasked with preparing and printing the banknotes for the movement, but that firm had no experience, and the finished product was subpar. Apparently, some notes of the series were issued before the official introduction, which caused the entire series to be destroyed. This high denomination note somehow displays what looks to be extensive circulation, and then shows stamped cancellations. Also, curiously, there are no serial numbers on this note. While some notes of this series are available, and available inexpensively, this denomination is not. Auction records are muddled by incorrect attribution, but make no mistake, this is an extremely rare type. This is only the second example offered in public auction. At the time of cataloging, this is the only example graded in the PMG Population Report. This is an incredibly rare type from the Spanish Civil War - a type that was supposed to be destroyed due to poor quality and a leak during logistics and transport or storage. The letter that accompanies the note is from Augustin de Alcocer Moreno of the Bank of Spain. Dated 1978, the letter is in response to D. Jose Luis Artiga Cia's request for an example of the note. He is the son of Ramon Artigas Garcia whose signature is seen at the center of this note as Governor of the Bank of Spain. The Bank of Spain released this surviving example so that Artigas Cia could complete his collection of notes signed by his father. The appearance of the note is such that it could have been one of the notes exposed to the leak. The mounting remnants on back are proof that this was displayed in some manner by the Bank of Spain, with "INUTILIZADO", or "unused" stamped on back. Extremely rare, historic, and important. https://currency.ha.com/itm/world-currency/spain-banco-de-espana-1000-pesetas-1871937-pick-106e-pmg-very-fine-20/p/4028-31057.s?type=CoinArchivesCurrency4028 HID08706262019 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
