Zurich. Canton "Gessner" Taler 1773 MS66 NGC, KM158, Dav-1792, HMZ-2-1164ddd, Hürlimann-629. Mintage: 36. By Salomon Gessner. Vorster as die-cutter. Easily the most beloved and elusive taler of 18th-century Zurich, presented here in an absolutely brilliant state that is quite simply usually unimaginable for the type. Reportedly struck to a miniscule figure of just 36 pieces, the dies supposedly had to be discarded--with the design never seeing reuse--due to fairly extensive cracking of the reverse die, hardly a trace of which is visible here, perhaps suggesting an earlier striking. Quite likely amongst the finest survivors, and a type that was notably missing from the Millennia Collection.
