Zurich. Canton 2 Taler 1624 MS65+ NGC KM38, Dav-4637, HMZ-2-1145b, Hürlimann-408. In a word: magnificent; a jaw-dropping offering of this instantly beloved type, surviving at a level that blows past all expectations for a coin of its age. To call such a piece museum quality would almost be to not do justice to the nature of the strike and preservation seen here. Struck from taler dies, the issue has the benefit of the entirety of the stamp being captured by the planchet, allowing full appreciation of its multitudinous features, a mild expansion of the metal at the time of striking leaving a silhouette of pull-away flow lines around the legends on the obverse. Both sides alike are bathed in a reflective sheen that speaks to minimal handling since the day it left the mint, only an overlay of gold and gunmetal tone giving any true sense to its age. For the sake of comparison, we have offered only 3 examples of this type previously, most recently the Allen Moretti specimen, an AU55, brought $11,400 in August 2019, while the world-record price of $25,850 was achieved by an MS65 offered as part of our August 2015 ANA Platinum Night auction. Besting that piece by virtue of its added, and clearly deserved, plus designation, we can only speculate as to the heights that the current offering will reach.
