Maximilian I (1493-1519) "Wedding" Guldiner 1479-Dated (after 1511) XF45 NGC, Hall mint, Dav-Unl., Schulten-4474, Voglhuber-3, Moser-Tursky-pg. 41, Fig. 83, Egg-15. By Ulrich Ursentaler. A gorgeous commemorative 'Schauguldiner' that easily ranks alongside the famous 1486 Sigismund of Tyrol guldiner as one of the earliest and most influential crown-sized coins of Renaissance-era Europe. Clearly belonging to the tradition of Renaissance medal engraving that had just begun to take shape in Italy--indeed, notice the similarities to the coins of his contemporary, Ludovico Maria Sforza of Milan--Maximilian was known to have had a preference for large-size, spread-flan coins, and himself presided over the design of many of the coin types employed throughout his reign. Produced by the brilliant die engraver Ulrich Ursentaler, this issue in particular commemorates one of the most significant events in the history of the House of Habsburg: the marriage of Archduke Maximilian to Maria of Burgundy, a political union which would have brought the vast and rich territories of Burgundy under his control. One of only six examples currently certified by NGC, the offering exhibits fine detail for its technical grade, mild doubling to the strike if anything enforcing the definition of the devices. Toned over to a light stone gray, collectors of the series will know how difficult locating high-quality specimens is, when one is found at all.
