German States
Saxony. Johann Georg I gold 2 Ducat 1630 MS65 NGC, Dresden mint, KM421, Fr-2701, Merseburger-1058, Whiting-112. 6.93gm. Struck on the centennial of the Augsburg Confession. CONFESS LUTHER: AUG: EXHIBITÆ SECULUM, Johann Georg, facing right, dressed in royal robes and cap, sword in right hand held over shoulder, extending left; IOH-GEOR across fields, 1630 | Z5 JULY around above / NOMEN | DOMINI | TURRIS | FORTISSIMA, Prince-Elector Johann I of Saxony facing right, clothed in royal attire with cap, clutching sword in right hand over right shoulder; IOAN-NES across fields, 1530 | Z5 JULY around above. A beautiful and awe-inspiring rendition of one of the most timeless Saxon gold types, rendered here with a precision and expertise of finish that is seldom matched. While flush with die polish, the fields are nearly Prooflike when held at the correct angle, producing a freshness of appearance that simply begs to be appreciated in hand. Tied with the ex. Goodman specimen for the second-finest graded across NGC and PCGS combined, and likely visually superior to the one MS66, which sold as part of our January 2015 NYINC sale.
