Edward III (1327-1377) gold Noble ND (1363-1369) MS67 NGC, Tower mint, Treaty Period, S-1503, N-1232, Schneider-75. 7.76gm. (annulet) ЄD | WARD: DЄI: GRA: RЄX: AnGL: DnS: hyB' x Z (retrograde) x AQ | T' (double saltire stops), Edward crowned, standing facing in ship, sword in right hand, shield in left / + IhC: AVTЄm: TRAnSIЄnS: PЄR: mЄDIV: ILLORVm: IBAT (double saltire stops), large floriate cross with Є at center, crowned lions in angles, all within polylobe with trefoils in spandrels. An absolutely astonishing grade for any coin of its age, we can only imagine the extreme care with which this selection was treated not long after it first left the mint. The surfaces appear as a slightly matte honey-gold, not showing the least evidence of bends or waviness, while the whole of the stamp is fully captured and expertly rendered. Though mild doubling exists in contained areas of the design, this thankfully stays clear of the king's face, and does nothing to inhibit a smooth reading of the legends. At present the single-finest certified by a full two grade points, we can only comment that the next finest we have offered, an MS65, brought $16,800 in our August 2018 ANA sale. For the sake of completeness, we note a few hairline scratches above the king's shield.
