William III Crown 1695 MS66 NGC, KM486, S-3470, ESC-991 (prev. ESC-87). OCTAVO edge. An utterly fantastic grade for what is well-known to be a very conditionally sensitive type, with both the shallowness of William's portrait and the issue's widespread use in commerce resulting in few examples surviving in any sort of meaningful state. Haloed by a prominent ring of sky-blue tone over both sides that wells towards violet and peach as it approaches the obverse center, the fields are flush with radiant flow lines the give a distinctive aura to the king's effigy. While a few minor fly-speck haymarks exist on the reverse, this face too resounds with cartwheel luster and is markedly white and icy outside of the peripheral registers. Presently one of just two in this peak grade, the last (ex. Cape Coral and Tallent) brought nearly $20,000 when it sold as part of our January 2018 NYINC sale.
