William III gold "Fine Work" 5 Guineas 1701 MS60 NGC, KM508, S-3456, Schneider-481. Plain scepters variety. A charming rendition of this most beloved type of William III, not least for its well-known associations with Sir Isaac Newton during his tenure as master of the Royal Mint, but also for its distinctively refined bust style of the king, coming as a relief to the notorious shallowly engraved coins that were produced in droves prior to this issue, and consequently standing as a true talisman to Newton's numismatic genius. While admitting mild handling in the form of scattered wisps in the fields, bounding its designation, collectors of the series will know full well the difficulty with which these 5 Guineas pieces are procured in any sort of Mint State status, a technical caliber confirmed here by its sharp engraving and noteworthy glassy luster. Perhaps to thank for its preservation was this particular coin's early selection by Victorian-era numismatists for special care and preservation, the consignor indicating that it stems from an old English collection acquired c. 1818-1821. With an added hint of sunburst color in the center of the reverse, we can only say that the offering's visual appeal seems to exceed its technical grade.
