George IV gold Proof 1/2 Sovereign 1821 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM681, S-3802, W&R-244 (R3). Reeded edge. By Benedetto Pistrucci. A truly captivating offering of what is often considered to be one of the rarest British Proof sets of the 19th century, hardly ever seen at auction, and proving all the more exceptional for its peak grade across both major grading services. Deeply mirrored over both sides with a jet-black depth to the surfaces producing a night-and-day contrast between the fields and devices when the coin is rotated in hand, this selection presently stands as one of a paltry two PR65 Ultra/Deep Cameo-certified specimens at NGC and PCGS combined out of just over 20 seen to date. Certainly an ideal target for the connoisseur of the series, and the ideal type coin for George IV's inaugural 1/2 sovereign.
