Victoria gold Proof Sovereign 1839 PR65+ Deep Cameo PCGS, KM736.1, S-3852, W&R-302 (R4). Plain edge. Medal alignment. By William Wyon. A very rare type in this elite conditional tier, with only 11-20 purportedly known in total, according to Wilson & Rasmussen, though with certification figures pointing to a somewhat higher mintage. What is perhaps most admirable about this exceptional gem is its cameo contrast, which, at least to the obverse, is displayed with such thorough completeness that it arguably deserves a classification of its own beyond what Deep Cameo typically implies. Stunningly radiant in the fields, which serve as potent mirrors in which sharply produced devices are firmly anchored. Only faint hairlines keep this specimen from a "finest certified" distinction at PCGS, an honor which goes to a single example certified PR66 Deep Cameo.
