Victoria gold Proof 5 Pounds 1887 PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM769, S-3864, W&R-285. Mintage: 797. Variety with B.P. initials on reverse. Bold, beautiful, and a type that proves endlessly popular with collectors for both its low Proof mintage of only 797 examples as well as its association with the Golden Jubilee of the long-reigning Queen of Britain, Victoria. Choice preservation for this scarce issue always yields a high level of collector interest, yet this example takes that preservation even further by virtue of its impressive surfaces, sufficiently well-cared-for to very nearly result in gem certification by NGC. Full mint frost resides over the devices, with a rich cameo contrast extending equally impressively to both the obverse and reverse design motifs. The fields, fully reflective, reveal only faint hairlines to preclude an even finer grade, with the coin's radiant Proof finish essentially undiminished by either timer or human hands these past 133 years.
