Great Britain
Edward VII gold Matte Proof Sovereign 1902 PR68 NGC, KM805, S-3969, W&R-408. By George W. De Saulles. What else can be said about the present coin than that it is essentially flawless? By virtue of its technical grade alone, this Matte Proof sovereign is practically unimprovable, ranking as the undisputed single finest certified out of nearly 400 examples currently seen, with the next highest being a full two grade points lower, and the appeal does not stop there. Owing to the swirling raised hairlines often resulting from the sandblasting process, this type is frequently deemed to be lower grade than it really is. Yet here, the process of producing the matte finish for the selection if anything has left the fields crystal-clear and unyieldingly open to inspection, as if boasting of its utter paucity of stray marks. Quite simply a coin that could be inspected under close magnification for hours and still appreciated in full.
