Philip V gold "Royal" 4 Escudos 1711 MXo-J MS65 PCGS, Mexico City mint, KM-R55.1 (Rare), Cal-228 (Extremely Rare; same dies), Cay-9805 (same), cf. Sedwick-M30. 13.39gm. By José Eustaquio de León. From the 1715 Plate Fleet. An ideal representative of this first-year "Royal" 4 Escudos known from Philip V's reign, capturing the fineness of the one recorded die pairing for the date with an absolute minimum of the usual doubling seen for the issue while the outer borders are slightly capped and almost entirely full. Though closely contended by the so-called Ubilla-Echevez specimen, even that piece does not seem to quite match the clarity of detail expressed here. Just out-of-round, the flan presents heavily die polished surfaces positively blooming with mint luster. Presently the sole certified example, and the first that we have had the privilege to offer.
