Mexico
Charles III gold 4 Escudos 1760 Mo-MM XF40 PCGS, Mexico City mint, KM140, Cal-316, Fr-26. A very rare two-year transitional type and one of the classic rarities of the entire Mexican Colonial gold series, with ten or less pieces known of the date, and one of the few major types missing from the Gerber group. The pedigree of this piece reflects a documented history going back to J.C. Morgenthau's February 1935 sale of the Waldo C. Newcomer Collection, with the specimen later included in the collections of John H. Clapp and Louis E. Eliasberg. For both its rarity and esteemed pedigree this piece may therefore be considered of the highest numismatic importance to Latin American collectors. Sharply struck, glints of gleaming golden residual luster expressed across the surfaces, a light patina with clay-red touches decorating the legends.
Ex. Eliasberg Collection (Stack's ANR Auction, April 2005, Lot 3141); John H. Clapp Estate (privately sold through Stack's in 1942); Waldo C. Newcomer Collection (J.C. Morgenthau February 1935, Lot 392).
