James V gold Ducat or "Bonnet Piece" 1539 VF Details (Edge Damage, Filing) NGC, Edinburgh mint, Saltire Cross mm, Third coinage, S-5373, Fr-25, Burns-pg. 251, 2 (Fig. 752), SCBI XXXV-901-3. 5.48gm. IΛCOBVS • 5 • DEI • G • R • SCOTORV • 1 • 5 • 3 • 9, mantled bust right, wearing bonnet; small pellet to left / + HONOR • REGIS • IVDICIVM • DILIGIT, crowned coat-of-arms over cross fleurée. Belonging to the earliest coinage of Scotland (and of the British Isles in general) to bear a date, and struck from local Scottish gold, this 1539-dated issue is a true rarity, much more so than its already quite difficult 1540 counterpart. Though exhibiting some damage to its edges, this particular specimen nevertheless remains a splendid example of the type. Moderate yet even wear is observed, though the strike remains well centered and preserves a charming degree of detail. The first of this date we have offered, and only the second to have crossed the auction block in recent memory--the last, stemming from the LaRiviere Collection, considered an 'about very fine', hammered for £7,500 in 2006 (roughly $13,000 at the time). A stunning issue, and one which no doubt will elicit a premium bid for its exceptional rarity.
