France
Republic 5 Francs L'An 11 (1802/1803) MS64 NGC, Paris mint, KM639.1, Dav-1337. Produced during the administration of the French Consulate, which saw Napoleon elevated to the position of First Consul with the nominal republic prior to the declaration of the First French Empire in 1804. Exceptionally well-preserved for this historically important type, with an airy silver patina laid upon surfaces displaying brightly shimmering mint luster, the devices well-produced and rising in sound relief above the fields. Light wisps above the Hercules motif are arguably the only factor precluding a higher grade, and only a single example certifies finer at NGC.
