The only coronation issues explicitly produced in matte finish--subsequently used only for special photographic purposes--the 1902 issues frequently feature swirling raised hairlines in the fields as a consequence of the sandblasting process used to produce the dies, a quality seen upon the present examples and perhaps accounting for the conservative assigned grades. Nonetheless, a pleasingly matched set, the only outlier being the smallest denomination, which displays a shallow scratch on the reverse above the head of St. George.
