Papal States. Innocent XII gold Doppia (2 Scudi d'Oro) Anno VI (1697) UNC Details (Reverse Repaired) NGC, Rome mint, KM603 (same dies), Fr-175 (this coin), Munt-3, B-2213. 6.69gm. INNO • | XII • P • M • A • VI, capped and mantled bust of Pius right, F • D • S • V • below / (trefoil) NVNTIA | PACIS (trefoil), dove holding olive branch over scene of Noah's ark. By Ferdinando de Saint Urban. An exceptionally rare Papal type struck in commemoration of the conclusion of the Peace of Rijswijk in 1697 between France, Spain, Holland, England, and the Holy Roman Empire, an effort which Innocent himself had spearheaded. In spite of the noted repair work over the reverse fields, the strike on the whole is entirely admirable, with a well-centered expression of detail throughout. Our research indicates perhaps fewer than 5 have come to auction in the last one to two decades, indicating the superb rarity of the issue.
