GUATEMALA: Fernando VII, 1808-1821, AR 8 reales, 1809-NG, KM-64, assayer M, attractive light toning, EF. The engravers in the Spanish colonies didn 't know what Fernando VII looked like when he came to power, mainly because he was in exile during the Napoleonic Wars. They resolved this by creating the imaginary bust types (Mexico, Peru), or as they have here, used Carlos IV 's portrait. The 8 reales of 1808 with correct Fernando VII bust were struck later and backdated.
