GREAT BRITAIN: gilt medal, 1821, 48mm, Death of Caroline, Queen Consort of the United Kingdom medal, OPPRIMEE ELLE A VECU 52 ANS ELLE EST MORTE LA 7 AOUT 1821 around figure in Roman garb representing George IV leaning on pillar and holding laurel wreath, his foot on semi-nude female figure holding dagger representing Caroline, trident and other implements to left, British lion couchant at right, CAROLINE DE BRUNSWICK, REINE D 'ANGLETERRE in exergue, set in ornate hand-carved 19th-century box, VF. Caroline of Brunswick was queen consort of the United Kingdom as the wife of King George IV from 29 January 1820 until her death in 1821. She was the Princess of Wales from 1795 to 1820. She had a troubled marriage with George involving the "Delicate Investigation," social isolation, exile, her return to Britain, and the "Pains and Penalties Bill."
