GUATEMALA: Fernando VII, 1808-1821, AR 8 reales, 1808-NG, KM-64, assayer M, light reverse tooling marks, with portrait of Carlos IV on the coin, Choice VF. The engravers in the Spanish colonies didn 't know what Ferdinand VII looked like when he came to power, mainly because he was in exile during the Napoleonic Wars. They resolved this by creating the imaginary bust types (Mexico, Peru), or as they have here, used Carlos IV 's portrait. The 8 reales of 1808 with correct Fernando VII bust were struck later and backdated.
