It will be remembered that tragedy struck the Exposition and the Nation on Sept. 6, 1901. President William McKinley, 25th President of the United States, was greeting citizens late that afternoon in the Temple of Music when shot down by Leon Czolgosz, an anarchist terrorist. The President died Sept. 14. The official medals were struck in the Mint Exhibit on the grounds; designed by George Thomas Brewster.
