Richard II (1377-1399), Noble, Type IVB, 'Henry IV Style', Tower, RIC | ARD .' DEI : GRA : REX : ANGL .' S : FRANC .' D .' HIB : Z . AQ | T, double saltire stops, King standing in ship, holding sword and shield, crescent on rudder, four additional pellets in shield, ropes 3/1, ornaments 1-1-1-1, quatrefoils 4/4, rev. + IhC : AVTEM TRANSIENS : PER : MEDIV .' ILLORVM : IBAT, double saltire stops, floriate cross, crowned leopards in angles, large R in centre, 7.60g, 11h, i.m. cross pattée (Isladulcie -; Schneider I, 187 same obverse die; Webb-Ware 4b; N.1304[3]; Spink 1658), slight crimping to rim, otherwise on a delightfully fuller flan, uniformly struck up, a really good very fine, very rare, with only two other examples traced at public auction this millenium!.
One of the two examples sold since 2000 appeared at a New York Inc (Heritage, Sale 3071, 6 January 2019, lot 34216 - $13,000) wherein it was generously graded NGC MS65 despite the portrait and large elements of the peripheral detail being struck flat. This coin and that of the previous lot are evidently far more even and uniformly struck.
Estimate: £5,000 - £8,000
