IONIA, Uncertain. Circa 600-550 BC. EL Forty-eighth Stater (5mm, 0.27 g). Phokaic standard. Forepart of bull left, head facing / Incuse square with cruciform lines within(?). Cf. Leu 7, lot 1278. Obverse off center. VF. Extremely rare.
The crude obverse on this coin appears to be a facing bull's head, of which only one example is known. That piece, however, has an obverse of significantly finer style, coupled with a plainer reverse punch. The reverse of this specimen bears some resemblance to those of the horse or winged horse series.
