British India, Victoria, Rupees (2), Bombay mint, 1877, bust left with 3.75 panels in jabot, both 'v' and crescent on base line of bust, bead above flower on reverse, 1901, bust with 3.3 panels in jabot and no 'v' or crescent (S & W 6.35 var, 6.164; Pr. 143 var, 188 var), with original envelopes from Puddester sale, the first extremely fine, reverse better, a rare variant, the second toned, good very fine (2).
provenance
ex Robert Puddester Collection, DNW, 8 Oct 2002, lot 1583

Originally described as being "neither listed by Pridmore". In the case of the 1877 coin this appears to be the case as it clearly has a full 'v' on the ground line of the bust and not a single left stroke. Even Stevens & Weir do not list a coin with their obverse type A1 and reverse II.
The 1901 coin can now be classified as S & W 6.164 (and hence a variety of Pr. 188), as Stevens & Weir have noted (citing Price) that this type is also known with obv. C1.
Estimate: £40 - £60
