Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Anonymous (c.960-1214), gold Kahavanu, 4.46g, type II (1) 'Lotus and adahanda (half-moon)', standing figure of Ceylon style, palm tree and lamp stand under arm in left field, holding open lotus right, four annulets below right, beneath feet a line of beads connecting a conch left and a flower bud right, rev. figure seated right on an asana (low throne), holding a large adahanda (half moon), Devanagari legend in right field Sri Lamka Vibhu (fortunate lord of Sri Lanka) (Codrington supp. plate 4; Mitchiner, Southern India, part 2, -), edge adjusted slightly, extremely fine, scarce.
As these coins are classified by Codrington as 'type II' they may have been an early issue. This is no.1 of his type II issues and is usually struck on a small flan. , The metallic composition of this particular coin is uncertain, although XRF tests of similar type II (1) coins have shown they contain under 60% of gold, up to 40% of silver and a tiny amount of copper.
