Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Anonymous (c.960-1214), gold Kahavanu, 4.43g, type II (var), trident and lotus, standing figure of Ceylon style, palm tree and lamp stand under arm in left field, lotus flower above head, holding trident right, three annulets below right, beneath feet a line connecting two conches, rev. figure seated right on an asana (low throne), holding an open lotus, Devanagari legend in right field Sri Lamka Vibhu (fortunate lord of Sri Lanka) (Codrington - , obv. similar to sup. 5, rev. as 48; Mitchiner, Southern India, part 2, -), edge slightly filed above standing figure, about extremely fine/ good very fine, scarce.
This coin appears to be a Codrington 'type II', although he did not describe this exact variant. His supplementary plate, ill. 5 depicts a coin with a similar obverse, but with no flower above the head of the standing figure. , A coin of this exact type has been recorded by the cataloguer and an XRF test revealed it contained 57-60% of gold, 35-37% of silver and 3-6% copper.
