Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Nissanka Malla (1187-96), silver-washed Kahavanu, 4.18g, standing figure of Ceylon style, holding a flower right, lamp stand under arm in left field, four annulets with a solid bead above in right, rev. figure seated right, holding a conch shell right, Devanagari legend in right field Sri Kale(m) ga La(m) keja (Sri Kalinga Lamkendra) (Codrington 78; Mitchiner, Southern India, part 2, 321), deeply struck on a thick flan, extremely fine and rare.
Nissanka Malla was the last king to rule over the whole island from Polonnaruwa. He is famous for much building work and many inscriptions at the capital, as well as leading an attack on the Tamil mainland. He claimed descent from Kalinga, as the inscription on his coins demonstrate. This was important at the time as the original Buddhist settlers on the island had come from Kalinga at the time of the Buddha and it helped establish his right to rule. , The cataloguer has not had the opportunity to test one of these coins for their metal contact, so I am grateful to refer to https://coins.lakdiva.org/ that lists a base silver Nikkha of the same type with an XRF reading of 15.7% silver, 79.3% copper and impurities, 2.8% gold, 1.2% nickel and 1.0% platinum
Estimate: £200 - £250
