British Medals, John Claypole (1625-1688), of Narborough [Northborough], a British Museum silvered electrotype by Robert Ready of Thomas Simon's extremely rare silver badge in the national collection, Bust of Claypole left, hair falling over buttoned doublet, the reverse with the engraved name 'Mr. Claypole', edge stamped RR at top, 31.5 x 22mm. (MI.397/23; Vertue, 1780, p. 32; Platt II, p. 67, type A3), with suspension loop, as made, extremely fine
John Claypole [or Cleypole] was an officer in the Parliamentary army who, c.1646, married Oliver Cromwell's second (and favourite) daughter, Elizabeth (d. 1658). His elevation to the peerage in 1657 was annulled following the Restoration in 1660.
