Napoleon's achievement here echoes that of the Roman emperor Augustus, who celebrated his own diplomatic coup in having the Parthians return standards that had been lost by Crassus at the Battle of Carrhae in 53 BC. The image is reinforced by having Napoleon hold a Roman flag and wearing stylised Roman armour.
