World Medals, France, World War I (1914-1918), badges (2), by René Jules Lalique (1860-1945), silvered-bronze diamond-shaped, standing angel with letters and numeral P-R2, 32 x 28.5mm., suspension loop; 'Poilu' cross, 1915, silvered-brass, naked figure grasping an eagle by the throat, 34.5mm., brooch pin on reverse, both very fine (2)
'Poilu', or 'shaggy one', was the nickname for the ordinary French infantryman, equivalent to the British 'Tommy'. Lalique, whose fame lies as a glass designer, made only a small number of medallic pieces.
