Auctioned in association with and on behalf of Numismática Lucernae, Jaén.

C. Julius Eurycles led Spartan ships to join Octavian at the battle of Actium and was later awarded Roman citizenship and the title of 'hegemon' of the Spartans following the victory. His distinction by the emperor Augustus was not the only benefit from his involvement in the battle. In defeating Antony, Eurycles avenged his father, Lachares, whom Antony had executed.
