France - Denier s.d, Silver, CHARLES le Chauve 840–877, Monnaies Carolingiens Rennes. Karolus monogram ✠ GRATIA D - I REX. Rev. short cross pattée ✠ HREDONIS CIVITAS.Bigot 60; MG. 1045; Prou 651-652.During the time of Charles the Bald Bretagne was a contested land. After the Breton prince Nominoe was appointed "ruler of the Bretons" as tributary to Charles, relations quickly soured. A series of rebellions were fought between Charles and Nominoe, and later also against the latter's son Erispoe and nephew Salaun (or Salomon). The city in which this coin was minted, Rennes or Roazhon, is located in the frontier region between Brittany and the Frankish realm and often changed hands between the years 840 and 860. Both Erispoe and Salaun were created count of Rennes by king Charles and paid tribute to him. It is sometimes suggested that these coins were minted as confirmation of loyalty by the Breton kings for the Frankish ruler.1.25 g Extremely fine
