PROVINCIALE MUNTEN - Dukaton of zilveren rijder 1739, Silver, Holland Ruiter naar rechts boven provinciewapentje MON: FŒD: BELG: PRO: HOLL: IN USUM SOCIET: IND: ORIENT. Kz. generaliteitswapen, jaartal boven de kroon, VOC in cartouche. Kabelrand.Scho. 28b; Delm. 1061; Dav. 417; KM. 71.The Ducatons of 1739 have a regular and, according to our research, a presentation issue. Listed as such in the literature as variants 28b and 28c, where Scholten notes that the dies made for these types were of better workmanship. As presentation pieces were reserved for higher officials of the Dutch East India Company or their esteemed trade partners, the coins struck, had to be of a quality befitting their intended recipients.

The rivets of the armor, the vestments and the manes of the horse all display an undeniable sharpness. With on the reverse, the crest and its supporters matching that level of detail. What is further striking of this piece are the prooflike fields, further supporting the theory that this is indeed a presentation piece.
