PHRYGIA. Eumeneia. Pseudo-autonomous issue. Assarion (Bronze, 19 mm, 4.78 g, 12 h), circa 180-218. ЄYMЄNЄIA Turreted and draped bust of the city-goddess to right. Rev. AXAIΩN Kybele seated left, holding patera in her right hand and leaning left on tympanon; to left, lion seated left. RPC IV.2 online 20163. SNG Leypold 1517. Somewhat rough, otherwise, very fine.
Eumeneia was founded by Attalos II (159-138 BC) in honor of his brother and predecessor Eumenes II (197-158 BC). Unlike many of the other Attalid foundations, the city claimed Achaean rather than Macedonian heritage in Roman times, indicating that its original settlers were not Macedonian veterans but Achaean colonists.
