Uncertain, circa 10th century. Amulet (Lead, 40 mm, 18.78 g, 12 h), womb amulet. ΠANAΓIA ΘЄO[TOK]Є AΓIOΛAMANA (retrograde) The Mother of God facing, both hands raised in prayer; all within decorated border. Rev. Rider on horseback to left; sun (?) in the upper left field; all within decorated border. Cf. J. Spier: Medieval Byzantine Amulets and their Tradition, in: Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes, vol. 56 (1993), p. 25-62, no. 28 (for an amulet with a very similar image of the Mother of God, but paired with the "facing head with serpent heads", identifying our piece as a womb amulet as well). A lovely example of particularly charming style. Good very fine.
