Według Crawforda Lucjusz Aureliusz Kotta był trybunem plebsu w 103 roku pne i mógł być również pretorem od 95 roku pne. Prezentowany denar został wybity ku pamięci, Gajusza Aureliusza Kotty, przodka Lucjusza, który zajął Liparę, kiedy był konsulem w 252 roku pne, podczas pierwszej wojny punickiej. Na monetach tej wyspy występowały również pzredstawienia Wulkana. Za przeprowadzenie tej operacji konsul Gajusz Aureliusz Kotta otrzymał Triumf.
