C. Hosidius C.f. Geta, 64 BC. Denarius (Silver, 17 mm, 3.86 g, 7 h), Rome. GETA - III VIR Draped bust of Diana to right, with bow and quiver over her shoulder. Rev. C HOSIDI C F The wild boar of Calydon advancing to right, wounded by spear and attacked by a hound to right. Babelon (Hosidia) 1. Crawford 407/2. Sydenham 903. Nice old collection toning. A few minor scratches on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.

In mythology, the Calydonian boar was sent to ravage the Aetolian hinterland due to King Oeneus' neglecting to pay proper respects to the goddess Diana. The boar destroyed the crops and terrorized the people, forcing them to shelter behind their city walls. With starvation ensuing, a hunt was organized in which all of Greece's heroes, except Herakles, took part. Atalanta, the only female hero, took the signal honor of making the first wound, piercing the beasts' side with an arrow. While the significance of the design on this coin is lost to us, it can be assumed that Hosidius either claimed descent from one of the heroes involved in the hunt (perhaps from Atalanta herself), or had some other connection to Aetolia and the goddess Diana.
