Known as Metellus Scipio, the issuer of this coin was a supporter of Pompey in the war against Caesar. Initially successful in Africa, when Caesar arrived he was defeated at Thapsus in 46. While he escaped the battle his fleet was destroyed by Publius Sittius at Hippo Regius and he then committed suicide.
