CILICIA. Tarsus. Commodus and Annius Verus, Caesars, 166-177 and 166-169/70, respectively. (Bronze, 18 mm, 2.67 g, 7 h), c. 166-168. ΚΟΡΟΙ CEΒΑCΤΟΥ Confronted bare-headed and draped busts of Commodus, on the left, facing right, and Annius Verus, on the right, facing left; between them below, crossed caduceus and club, with their ends toward the bust of Commodus. Rev. ΤΑΡCΟΥ / ΜΗΤΡΟΠΟ/ΛEΩC / ΚΟΙΝΟC ΚΙΛΙΚΙΑC Decastyle temple with eagle in the pediment. BMC 165. RPC IV.3, 5035 (temporary). SNG BN 1455 and 1457. SNG Levante 1018. Dark green patina. Minor porosity. Very fine.

Tarsus struck a fairly extensive series of coins in honour of the two sons of Marcus Aurelius, this one, with very youthful busts, each with abundant, curly hair, and a second issue, usually with a star between the busts, along with the caduceus and club, and with somewhat older, larger busts and shorter, more closely cropped hair.
