M. Aburius M. f. Geminus AR Mule Denarius. Rome, 132 BC. Helmeted head of Roma to right; XVI monogram behind / Sol driving galloping quadriga to right, M ABVRI below horses; ROMA in exergue. Crawford p. 63, note 1; RSC -; R. Witschonke 'Some Unpublished Roman Republican Coins' (Essays Russo), p. 356, D2 = RBW 1028 (same dies). 3.70g, 20mm, 3h.

Very Fine; attractively toned. Of the highest rarity; apparently the fourth known specimen with two in museum collections.

Auctioned in association with and on behalf of Numismática Lucernae, Jaén.

While the majority of hybrid Republicans coins are plated or imitations, Witschonke supports Crawford (p. 63, note 1) and M. Bahrfeldt (Nachträge und Berichtigungen zur Münzkunde der Römischen Republik, p. 2, no. 2) in believing that the extremely rare denarii with the obverse of P. Maenius Antiaticus (249/1) and the reverse of M. Aburius Geminus (250/1) to be an erroneous hybrid issue of the official mint. Crawford cites only two examples: one in Turin (F645); the other in Hannover (Berger, Die Münzen der Römischen Republik im Kestner-Museum Hannover, no. 3894) and was the first to link the obverse to the issue of P. Maenius Antiaticus based on style.

Besides the two examples held in Turin and Hannover, a third specimen was brought to auction in 2011 by NAC as part of the RBW collection. This present example is the only other to appear at auction and is a die match to the RBW coin, providing further evidence of the certainty that this issue was a mint error.
