Medals of the 1848 Revolution
Liesville, A.-R. de. HISTOIRE NUMISMATIQUE DE LA RÉVOLUTION DE 1848 OU DESCRIPTION RAISONNÉE DES MÉDAILLES, MONNAIES, JETONS, REPOUSSÉS, ETC. RELATIFS AUX AFFAIRES DE LA FRANCE. Paris: Honoré Champion, 1877–1884. Nine parts; all issued. Folio [32.5 by 24.5 cm], late blue cloth, gilt; original printed paper covers mostly bound throughout. xii, 336, (4) pages; text and plate titles printed in red and black; 108 attractively engraved plates of medals. Some of the original paper covers are chipped and repaired; else near fine. Copy No. 5 of an entire edition limited to 365 copies. While de Saulcy's classic work on the topic listed only 566 items, de Liesville proposed describing over 2000 pieces, a goal never achieved due to his death in 1885. The nine parts present here comprise descriptions and illustrations of 714 pieces, arranged chronologically from February to April 1848. One of only two sets we have ever handled. Engel et Serrure 4045 (recording only the first four parts). Ex 1985 Joint Kolbe/Spink New York Book Auction, lot 240.
