Major Work on Jean Varin
Mazerolle, F. JEAN VARIN, CONDUCTEUR DE LA MONNAIE DU MOULIN, TAILLEUR GÉNÉRAL DES MONNAIES, CONTROLEUR GÉNÉRAL DES POINÇONS ET EFFIGIES: SA VIE, SA FAMILLE, SON OEUVRE (1596–1672). Paris: Bourgey & Schemit, 1932. Two volumes. 4to, original card covers with printed jackets. Frontispiece portrait; (4), 131, (1) + (4), 187, (1) pages; 18 fine plates. Light spotting, mostly relegated to the jackets. Near fine. A major study of this important artist (1604–1672), whose innovations at the Paris Mint were as significant as his own contributions to medallic art. Varin (or Warin) instructed the young King Louis XIV in numismatics, instilling in him the appreciation of coins and medals that contributed so heavily to his legacy. Very scarce. Clain-Stefanelli 14573.
