Mirabeau on Monetary Questions
Mirabeau, Honoré-Gabriel de Riquetti, Comte de. DISCOURS DE M. MIRABEAU L'AINÉ, SUR LES QUESTIONS MONETAIRES, AJOURNÉES AU JEUDI 9 DÉCEMBRE PAR LE DÉCRET DE DIMANCHE 5. PRONONCÉ DANS LA SÉANCE DU DIMANCHE 12. Paris: Imprimerie Nationale, 1790. Small 8vo, later blue quarter calf with marbled sides; spine ruled and lettered in gilt; marbled endpapers. 54 pages. Extremities rubbed; near fine. A rare and rather substantial contribution to the wide-ranging discussions taking place at this time about the future monetary system and coinage of France. Mirabeau (1749–1791) was at the height of his power in 1790, only a few months before his death. Indeed, he was the first person to be honored with interment in the Panthéon-though his remains were disinterred only a few years later when his name fell into disrepute, and replaced with those of Jean-Paul Marat, who himself was disinterred only a few months later when his own reputation was disgraced.
