Two Works on Russian Medals by Iversen on Medals of Peter the Great
Iversen, J. MEDAILLEN AUF DIE THATEN PETER DES GROSSEN. St. Petersburg: Buchdruckerei von Wilhelm Pratz, 1872. (4), xxvii, (1), 66, (4) pages; 12 finely engraved plates of medals. [bound with] Iversen, I. BEITRAG ZUR RUSSISCHEN MEDAILLENKUNDE. 160 BISHER UNEDIRTE, PRIVAT-PERSONEN ERTHEILTE, MEDAILLEN. St. Petersburg: Buchdruckerei von Eduard Pratz, 1870. Engraved frontispiece plate depicting both sides of two medals; 88 pages. 4to, somewhat later black cloth-backed mottled boards; spine lettered in gilt [second work is in octavo format]. Some foxing, particularly to first title. Very good. Two very rare works on Russian medals, by one of the foremost Russian numismatists of the 19th century. The main work is one of only 200 copies issued of the original German edition of this classic book, and is one of Iversen's most important contributions to numismatics. The second work here present remains the most comprehensive in its field. Iulii Bogdanovich Iversen (born Julius Gottlieb Iversen) became a senior keeper in the Hermitage Numismatic Department in 1879. Clain-Stefanelli 14940* & 14939. Not in Gromachevskii (the 1872 Russian version of the first title only is listed). Ex Leonidas C. Hermes Library, with his label; ex 1997 Kolbe New York Book Auction, lot 54.
