Appleton's Very Rare Work on Washington Medals
Appleton, W.S. DESCRIPTION OF MEDALS OF WASHINGTON IN THE COLLECTION OF W.S. APPLETON, SECRETARY OF THE BOSTON NUMISMATIC SOCIETY. Boston: Press of T.R. Marvin and Son, 1873. 4to, later brown cloth lettered in gilt; original printed card covers repaired and bound in. 24 pages; over 300 listings. Card covers chipped. Very good. An extremely rare collected edition of a series of articles originally appearing in the American Journal of Numismatics. It marked a great advance over the earlier efforts of Snowden and Woodward, being itself superseded by Baker's magnum opus a dozen years later. The author, a lifelong Boston resident, devoted his life to numismatics and historical studies, forming extensive collections of coins and medals. The condition of this example may be lacking, but it is the first we've offered in years. Ex Jack Collins Library; ex Kolbe Sale 65, lot 180.
